I saw a Euro imported Gelandewagen, looks like people who moved here to SF. It had a smallish red (background) and white (letters and outline I think) metal shield on the grille, stamped metal like a license plate with a few numbers and letters I think??. Looked like some kind of vehicle plate but I’m not sure what it was. It already had a CA plate but that was on the grille.

With you description, a red background plate at least here in Bulgaria(and some other former Eastern block countries) are given to diplomatic cars. Like this:
Those also can be had in a square form like a US style plate, but taller.

The only red european plates with white letters I know of, are french temporary plates. However those are full eurosize plates.
Old belgian plates were small, however they had red letters on a white background.

No this was a shield shaped metal plate, smaller. It was on the grille.

It wasn’t a normal license plate, small and shield shaped. Maybe some old inspection or tax plate? I have no idea. It looked officially made, made no sense as something to put on a grille like a flag of a country. I thought maybe Swiss but I can’t find anything.

Singapore
British Columbia Consular plate (Canadian Consular plate)
Sweden
Several other nations from temporary licence plates, tourist licence plates, etc...

Hmm interesting, shield shaped as in oval-ish? Because something like that popped into my mind, but I can’t really put my finger on it, though I will keep searching for it!

Or like this: This is an Austrian Moped plate, no idea what this would do on a Geländewagen though, maybe some kind of limited speed farm use vehicle, or something similar.

Yeah it was a lot more like that. Not sure what it was. I could tell they didn’t buy the Mercedes here. It was bolted onto the grille. It wasn’t exactly like that but pretty close.

Check out the pic BvdV posed above, it isn’t the same but it’s a lot closer.

Del Monte Forest parking badge?
There’sa few gated communities in the bay that have grille-mounted parking badges. Could have been a different one.

I found a site, license plate mania and I might email them, see if anything comes to mind.

I thought it might be something like a parking or official badge. It was the opposite, red background. You are onto something I think! We may never know, but it is probably something like that.

Mercedes has small badges for high mileage cars (250k+ km’s). Maybe it was one of those.

No, I have an old Merc, those are just a star with the mileage below. They are pretty small.

2006 would match your description:

Could be it, it was red and I do think there was a horizontal line in it.
